If you are setting up an online store in Australia, WooCommerce and Shopify are the two names you will hear most. Both are excellent. The right choice depends on how much control you want and how central selling is to your business. If you are still deciding on the wider platform, our guide to WordPress or Shopify for your small business takes a step back.
WooCommerce: control and flexibility
WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so you get complete control over design, content and features, and you own everything. It suits businesses that want a content-rich site with a store attached, and there are no platform sales fees. The trade-off is that you are responsible for hosting, security and maintenance, ideally with a good partner, and it pays to set WooCommerce up the right way from the start.
Shopify: simplicity and speed to launch
Shopify is built purely for selling. Payments, shipping, inventory and security are handled for you, and it scales smoothly. It is ideal for businesses where the store is the main event. The trade-offs are monthly fees, transaction costs on some plans, and less freedom over design and content.
Which should you choose?
- Pick WooCommerce if content, flexibility and ownership matter most.
- Pick Shopify if you want the fastest, simplest path to a high-volume store.
- Either way, the build quality and ongoing care matter more than the logo on the platform.
