Skink Insights - SEO and GEO

What Is GEO and How Do You Show Up in AI Search Results?

By

Key takeaways

  • GEO (generative engine optimisation) is making your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews to find, understand and recommend.
  • It matters because more people now act on an AI answer instead of clicking through search results.
  • AI recommends businesses with clear, specific, well-structured content, not vague marketing copy.
  • GEO extends SEO rather than replacing it: a fast site, clear content, good structure and schema help with both.

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It is the practice of making your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews to find, understand and recommend. Where traditional SEO helps you rank in a list of blue links, GEO helps you become the answer an AI gives when someone asks a question like “who is a good electrician in Penrith” or “what is the best accounting software for a small cafe”. For Australian businesses, it is quickly becoming the other half of being found online.

Why GEO matters now

More people are skipping the search results page entirely. They ask an AI assistant a question and act on the answer it gives. If the AI has never come across your business, or cannot work out what you do and where you do it, you simply do not exist in that conversation. Your competitor who is mentioned gets the enquiry instead.

The good news is that GEO is not a dark art. AI tools learn about businesses from the same public web that Google crawls. Clear, well-structured, genuinely useful content is rewarded in both places.

How AI tools decide who to recommend

AI assistants pull from a few main sources. They draw on their training data, which includes websites, directories and articles. Many also run live web searches behind the scenes and summarise what they find. That means they favour businesses that are described consistently and specifically across the web: on their own site, in Google Business Profile, in industry directories and in reviews.

Vague marketing copy is a real problem here. A homepage that says “innovative solutions for a connected world” gives an AI nothing to work with. A page that says “WordPress web design studio in Penrith, working with small businesses and Aboriginal art centres across Australia” gives it everything it needs.

Practical GEO steps for Australian businesses

  • Say plainly what you do and where. Name your services, your suburb or city, and who you serve, in normal sentences on your key pages.
  • Answer real questions. Publish pages and posts that directly answer the questions your customers ask, with the answer near the top. AI tools love quotable, direct answers.
  • Use structured data. Schema markup for your organisation, services, FAQs and articles helps machines understand your pages with confidence.
  • Keep your details consistent. Your business name, location and services should match across your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Earn genuine mentions. Reviews, industry write-ups and links from trusted Australian sites all increase the chance you get mentioned in AI search results as a credible answer.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Think of GEO as an extension of SEO rather than a replacement. The foundations are identical: a fast, well-built site, clear content, good structure and a healthy reputation. If your site already follows solid SEO practice, you are most of the way there. If it is not showing up on Google either, fix that first, because AI tools lean heavily on the same signals.

Where they differ is emphasis. GEO rewards direct answers, plain language and specificity even more than classic search does. It also cares less about squeezing an exact keyword into a heading and more about whether your content genuinely resolves the question.

Where WordPress fits in

WordPress is well suited to GEO because you control the whole site: content structure, headings, schema markup and page speed. A properly built WordPress website gives you the clean foundations that both Google and AI assistants rely on, and it is easy to keep publishing the question-and-answer content that GEO rewards. Our services cover all of this, from build through to ongoing content and technical care. For businesses that want a deeper digital marketing strategy around AI search, our colleagues at Defyn Digital work on exactly this problem.
