Skink Insights - SEO and GEO

How Do You Get Your Business Mentioned in AI Search Results?

By

If you want your business named when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews for a recommendation, the short answer is this: publish clear, specific pages that directly answer the questions your customers actually ask, and make sure other trusted websites mention your business by name. There is no secret ranking button and no ad slot you can buy. AI tools read the public web, so the work is mostly good findable content plus a consistent presence on the sites that already talk about your industry.

Why this suddenly matters

More people now start a search inside an AI assistant rather than on a results page. Instead of ten blue links they get one answer, often with only two or three businesses named in it. If you are not in that answer, you may as well not exist for that question.

This is being called generative engine optimisation, or GEO. Reassuringly, most of it is familiar ground for anyone who has done honest SEO. The difference is emphasis. AI tools reward clarity, specificity and structure far more than they reward repeating a keyword.

Answer the question directly on your own pages

AI models quote sources that make their job easy. A page that buries its answer under three paragraphs of throat clearing rarely gets used. A page that says “yes, and here is why” in the first line often does. In practice that means:

  • Use the real question as a heading, then answer it in the first sentence underneath.
  • Keep paragraphs short and self contained, so a passage can be lifted without losing its meaning.
  • Put important facts in plain text, not inside an image, a PDF or a video.
  • Use lists and simple tables for pricing tiers, service areas, comparisons and steps.
  • Date your content and keep it current. Stale pages get passed over.

Be specific about who you are and where you work

Vague copy is the enemy here. “We deliver innovative solutions” tells a model nothing it can match to a question. “We build WooCommerce stores for Australian retailers, based in Penrith and working across Sydney” gives it something concrete to work with.

Name your services, your suburbs, the industries you serve and the problems you solve. That is precisely why we keep separate service pages and location pages such as web design in Penrith rather than one catch-all page that mentions everything vaguely.

Get mentioned on sites that already get quoted

AI answers lean heavily on sources they consider reliable, and your own website is only one of them. Third party mentions and backlinks carry real weight. Worth chasing:

  • A complete, accurate Google Business Profile with reviews you have actually earned.
  • Industry bodies, chambers of commerce and reputable local directories.
  • Supplier and partner pages that list you as a stockist, installer or accredited provider.
  • Local news, community sites and genuine case studies published by clients.

Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere. Small inconsistencies make it harder for any system to be confident it is talking about the same business.

Keep the technical basics tidy

None of the above helps if your pages cannot be read. Check that your site loads quickly, uses HTTPS, has a working sitemap and is not accidentally blocking crawlers in robots.txt. Structured data helps too: marking up your business details, services, articles and FAQs gives machines an unambiguous version of the facts. If that sounds like a foreign language, our insights archive covers the basics, and the crew at Defyn Digital handle the deeper search and content side for clients who want it.

What is not worth your time

Ignore anyone selling guaranteed placement in AI answers. It cannot be bought, and the tools change month to month. Stuffing your pages with phrases like “best in Australia” does not help either. Neither does churning out dozens of thin, machine written articles, which tends to dilute the pages you actually want quoted.

A sensible place to start

Pick the ten questions your customers ask most often on the phone. Give each one a proper page or a clear section with the question as the heading and a straight answer underneath. Then ask a few AI tools those same questions and see who they name. That gives you an honest baseline and a short list of sites worth getting onto.
