Structured data sounds technical, but the idea is simple: it is a way of labelling the information on your website so machines understand it. That understanding helps you in search results and increasingly in AI answers. Here is the plain-English version.
What it actually is
Structured data, often called schema markup, is hidden code that tells search engines what something on your page is. It can say “this is a business”, “this is a review”, “this is an FAQ”, and so on. People do not see it, but machines read it.
Why it helps
When search engines understand your content clearly, they can show richer results, like star ratings, FAQs or business details. And AI assistants are more confident quoting a site whose information is clearly labelled. It is one of the quieter, higher-value things you can add.
Common types worth having
- Organisation, so your business details are clear.
- FAQ, to surface common questions and answers.
- Article, for blog posts and guides.
- Product and review, for online stores.
You do not need to write any of this yourself. We add the right structured data as part of building or improving a site, alongside the SEO work of the Defyn family. Want your site to speak clearly to search and AI? Get in touch or call 02 9834 4119.
