What Is Internal Linking and How Do You Do It Well on a WordPress Website?

By

Internal linking means adding links from one page of your website to another page on the same site. It helps visitors find what they need and helps Google understand which pages matter most. On WordPress it takes no special tools: you simply link related pages and posts using clear, descriptive wording.

Most small business websites have plenty of good pages that no one ever finds, simply because nothing points to them. A few well-placed links can change that.

Why internal links matter

Google finds pages by following links. If a page has no links pointing to it, Google may struggle to discover it, and visitors certainly will. Internal links also tell Google how your pages relate to each other, which helps it work out your main topics.

They help real people too. Someone reading about website speed might be glad to see a link to your page about hosting. That small nudge keeps them on your site longer and moves them closer to getting in touch.

Where to add internal links

Start with the pages that bring in business, such as your main service pages. Then look for natural places to link to them from your blog posts and other pages.

  • Blog posts to service pages. A post about WordPress security can link to your maintenance or WordPress development page.
  • Service pages to proof. Link from a service page to your past work so visitors can see results.
  • Related posts to each other. If two articles cover connected topics, link them both ways. Our insights section is full of examples.
  • Every page to your contact page. A clear path to enquire is the most valuable link of all.

How to write good link text

The clickable words are called anchor text. Make them describe where the link goes. “Our guide to WooCommerce setup” is far more helpful than “click here” or “read more”. Descriptive anchor text helps screen reader users and gives Google a clear hint about the destination page.

Keep it natural. You do not need to repeat the exact same keyword every time. Vary the wording a little, the way you would if you were explaining it to a friend.

How many internal links is enough?

There is no magic number. A good rule of thumb is two to five internal links in a typical 700 to 800 word post, placed where they genuinely help. If a link would not be useful to the reader, leave it out. Too many links make a page feel cluttered and dilute the value of each one.

How to add them in WordPress

In the block editor, highlight the words you want to link, click the link icon (or press Ctrl+K on Windows, Cmd+K on Mac), then start typing the title of the page. WordPress will suggest matching pages and posts from your site. Pick one and press Enter.

Avoid pasting your full web address when the page is on your own site. Choosing from the suggestions keeps the link accurate even if you later change your domain.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Orphan pages. Pages with no links pointing to them. Check your important pages are linked from somewhere sensible.
  • Broken links. Links to pages you have deleted or renamed. Run a check every few months and fix what you find.
  • Vague anchor text. “Click here” tells no one anything.
  • Linking only to the homepage. Your deeper pages are where the specific, high-intent searches land, so give them links too.

A simple routine to follow

Whenever you publish something new, spend five minutes on links. Add two or three links from the new post to existing pages, then go back to one or two older pages and link to the new one. That habit alone builds a strong web of connections over a year.
